It was a dominant performance from the Edmonton Oilers from near start to finish as they routed the Stars 5-2 in game four of the Western Conference Finals. Even after going down 0-2 in the first few minutes, the Oilers counter punched with two quick goals of their own at the end of the first period. They then took control from the second period on, holding the Stars offense to nothing while tacking on three more.
When digging deeper into the quality of shots generated in game four, the Oilers dominant win holds true as they finished with an Expected Goal score of 3.73 to the Stars 1.95. Even when down 0-2, the Oilers flipped the script in the Expected Goal scoreboard 0.664-0.512 once they netted in their first goal to cut the deficit. Game four now marks four games in a row where the Oilers have generated an Expected Goal of 3.00 or higher in this series.
Every bit of their elite offensive production was on full display in game four as all of their goals came off of a high quality shot opportunity. Excluding the empty netter, the Oilers four other goals clocked in an Expected Goal of 0.14, 0.40, 0.14, and 0.14. Even with a stud goalie like Jake Oettinger manning the Stars net, he can only do so much against an offense that applies relentless pressure with their high quality Shots on Goal.
With the Oilers now clocking in an Expected Goal of 3.00 in four straight games of the series, it’s safe to say that their offense will continue to be in a great position to do their part to cash the over. While a low scoring result is certainly possible as we saw earlier in the series, all we can ask for as bettors is that the Oilers continue to put themselves in the best positions possible to score at a high rate.
As for the Stars, even after a lackluster offensive performance we get the benefit of knowing that they will always be in a position to score against the Oilers lowly Stuart Skinner. Skinner has had a forgettable playoff performance to forget, ranking near dead last in the whole field and benched at one point during their series against the Vancouver Canucks. Skinner comes into game five with a Save Percentage of .887 and Goals Against per Game average of 2.71.
