Homophones are a great way to help kids understand that the meaning of words influences the spelling of words. Pick up a FREE Heart Homophones Pack, too! By thisreadingmama4 Comments Homophones are words that SOUND the same, yet look different. The first homophones young readers and spellers typically encounter are to/too/two. Why are these words spelled differently? To confuse kids? Not at all! Back up just a second with me to the purpose of teaching spelling. Spelling is two fold: 1- teaching phonics and the “rules”/generalizations that govern words and 2- teaching that meaning can influence the spelling of words. Homophones are a GREAT place to start when teaching the second purpose of spelling: that meaning can influence the spelling of words. So why are tale and tail spelled differently? Because they have two distinct meanings.

Heart Homophones {Matching Game}

Just this week, my 3rd grader had some fun with heart homophones. In this activity, he matched, drew, and spelled homophone pairs {not pears…sorry, that was bad.} matching heart homophones First, I printed the hearts on cardstock and cut out the homophone pairs. I mixed all the hearts up. He read each word, then match the homophones back together. After he had matched them all, we briefly talked about the spellings and the meanings of these words. drawing and spelling homophones Then I asked him to pick just four homophone pairs and draw pictures to show the different meanings of them. {He LOVED this part, as my son really likes to draw.} On another day, I plan on asking him to rematch the homophones, then pick four more to draw and spell. Note: If you don’t find a certain homophone pair in our pack, the last page has blank hearts that you can make and color yourself. So, there you have it! Homophones. And that’s your grammar lesson for today. 🙂
