Dallas Stars ML (+114) over Edmonton Oilers
I mentioned that Dallas will be away from the Lone Star State tonight, but that isn’t keeping me from targeting the Stars as the first leg of our Stars vs Oilers SGP. That is thanks to an impressive 6-2-0 road record throughout these 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs, which includes their Game 3 win in Edmonton. They overcame an early 2-0 deficit in that one. Of course, they would prefer such a slow start not to be the case yet again.
However, those 2 early tallies were also the first powerplay goals for the Oilers. That’s an incredible feat after Edmonton began the 2024 playoffs scoring a powerplay in 11 of the first 12 games. While it certainly didn’t feel like it on Friday night, the fact remains that Dallas still has the superior goaltender in Jake Oettinger. While shutting out the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl can never be expected, I anticipate that he’ll be able to do enough to help force a Game 7.
Over 5.5 (-105)
Not only has the Stars’ success against the Oilers powerplay surprised many fans, but so did Friday’s low-scoring Game 5. Especially following 2 quick goals in the first period, we seemed to be on pace for yet another shootout. Remember, the winning team had scored 5 goals in each of the previous 2 games. That’s why the total had ticked up from 5.5 to 6 for Friday night, but with a 3-1 finish we are back down to the lower number.
Well, that just means better value for the over in a game between 2 top-5 scoring teams on home ice. Of course, that only applies to Edmonton — but, as mentioned, Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner is simply not as strong or consistent as Oettinger. That means goals for Dallas as well in what should lead to us hitting this second leg.
Miro Heiskanen, DAL, Over 0.5 points (-140)
Speaking of consistency, that also applies to Miro Heiskanen. Many fans heard how heated Dallas coach Peter DeBoer was in his post-game press conference, and it’s safe to say that the early penalty on Heiskanen that led to the Oilers first goal was not something that he agreed with. Regardless, the Stars’ defenseman has been nothing short of fantastic keeping pace with McDavid and Draisaitl.
There has been plenty of discussion surrounding an Edmonton defenseman — Evan Bouchard — but Heiskanen is one of the primary reasons that Dallas has reached this point. As a standalone pick, you can grab his assist prop at plus money — which has been a great approach. Of his 54 points this year, 45 have been assists. Either way, his 16 overall points are tied for the most on Dallas this postseason, which is why he is the last leg of this SGP
