Golf Club of Houston Course Notes
- The course is a par 72 that plays to 7,425 yards
- It was designed by Rees Jones and David Toms
- There are plenty of water hazards but the trees frame the holes rather than offer a threat
- Most of the greens are wider than they are deep, and many more look that way
- There are five different course winners in the field: Ian Poulter, Matt Jones, Phil Mickelson, Anthony Kim, and Paul Casey
Favorites to Win the LIV Golf Houston
Jon Rahm (+750) at bet365
The Spaniard’s win drought is now up to 14 months but his form concerns go deeper than that. In seven LIV starts this year he has either performed badly in the final round or not been in contention with 18 holes to play. And in the year’s first two majors, he has been even worse. He was 45th on defense of the Masters and missed the cut in the PGA Championship. Bet on Jon Rahm (+750) at bet365
Bryson DeChambeau (+800) at bet365
The American’s performance in the PGA Championship was stellar on the course - he carded a brilliant final round 64 to set a clubhouse target only the winner Xander Schauffele could better - and he also reached an all-time high level of popularity among the fans. His last seven LIV starts in the U.S. have reaped six top-10 finishes including two wins. Bet on Bryson DeChambeau (+800) at bet365
Joaquin Niemann (+1000) at bet365
The Chilean will probably be pleased to be back playing regular tour golf because his last 14 of them have seen him record 13 top-10 finishes (three of them wins) but his major championship woes continue. He was 22nd in the Masters, 39th in the PGA Championship, and failed to qualify for the US Open early this week. Bet on Joaquin Niemann (+1000) at bet365
Major Chance for Koepka
Based on the best odds available, Brooks Koepka is ranked sixth in this week’s field and yet no one has won more LIV titles than his tally of four. Admittedly, one of this week’s favorites, Jon Rahm, hasn’t made anywhere near as many starts, but even so - the Spaniard is still to win once never mind four times. Koepka has been priced according to his defense of the PGA Championship, during which a third round 74 ruined his hopes of going back-to-back. Otherwise, however, he carded 67-68-66 which were excellent enough returns. Also, note that two of his major championship triumphs came on Rees Jones re-designs (at Bellerive and Bethpage Black) and that he will be desperate to find form before next week’s U.S. Open. Snap up the +1400 each way at Caesars Sportsbook which pays five places.
Poulter in a Sweet Spot
There’s no way of ignoring the truth that Ian Poulter’s returns on LIV had been poor. He’s made 27 starts and landed just two top 10s with a best of eighth earlier this year in Hong Kong. But he was a past winner at Hong Kong and a past winner at Valderrama where he was 12th on LIV (and had his best pre-final round position too). That suggests he likes returning to hunting grounds that have proved happy in the past and Houston is certainly that. Back in 2018, he arrived at the course needing nothing less than victory to earn himself a last-minute invitation to the Masters. As he reached the final green he had a long putt to force a playoff and made it. Shortly afterward, he defeated Beau Hossler in extra holes, a ticket to Augusta National booked. It was a highlight of his career and he will enjoy recalling how he delivered his best golf when it mattered most. You can back him at +6600 each way with bet365 - be sure to take this price because it pays out 12 places.
Gooch Primed
Keep the banker simple and back Talor Gooch to have another fine week. The American has landed 14 top-10 finishes in his 27 LIV starts and he improves that slightly to 8-for-14 when playing in the States. He’s even 4-for-7 this season and was fourth the last time he played the course in 2019. He should be odds on for another top-10 so take bet365’s offer of +105.
